PRESS RELEASE : "Les Femmes et Les Fleurs" by Jenny Belin

December 07, 2017

Les Femmes et Les Fleurs by Jenny Belin
June 28‑August 15, 2017

Opening reception: June 28, 5-8PM

Diana Kane is pleased to announce its new summer show, Les Femmes et Les Fleurs, by Brooklyn-based artist Jenny Belin.   Les Femmes et Les Fleurs features a wide selection of Belin’s portraits of women, flower studies, and pin-ups to create a thematic intersection of feminism, power, and beauty.   Belin draws her female subjects, painted in acrylic, and gouache, and ink on wood panel, from the uppermost circles of historic, intellectual and moral discourse, and from the loftiest tiers of popular and camp celebrity:  the 19th-century British mathematician Ada Lovelace sits comfortably in the company of American television actress Bea Arthur, and the US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg holds center court with the musician and poet, Patti Smith.   An enchanting collection of floral still-lifes, in ink, gouache, and acrylic, calls to mind the luscious flora occupying Monet’s home in Giverny, or the comprehensive, Northern European florilegium and botanical illustrations from the seventeenth century.  A backroom boudoir of pin-ups playfully  combines sexuality and postwar innocence, and even Belin’s special feline model, Edye, coyly appears in the pictures for added pleasure, fun, and allure.

Les Femmes et Les Fleurs is Diana Kane’s third feminist project following the presentation of Nope: The Women’s March on Washington, Photography by Torz Dallison (March 18 ‑June 15, 2017).

Les Femmes et Les Fleurs will be on view at Diana Kane from June 28, 2017 to August 15, 2017.   Diana Kane is located at 229-b Fifth Avenue, Park Slope Brooklyn, NY.

Jenny Belin received her BFA from Skidmore College.  She has had solo exhibitions at Kate Ganz Gallery, New York (2009), 325 Broome Street (2011), The Watercooler, Tarrytown, NY (2015), and Sabay Café Curatorial Space, Jackson Heights, Queens (2016).  Select group exhibitions include Art from Detritus, Viridian Artists Gallery, New York, NY (2015), Bowie Tribute Wall, Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2016), and Women Live, Village West Gallery, Jersey City, NJ (2017).
